It’s been almost two years since Qualcomm made an announcement about the Snapdragon 8cx. It is the leading ARM processor for Windows laptops, but at the IFA 2020 the company introduced its successor – Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G – which guarantees some improvements over the original.
Qualcomm has not been very open about the specific performance improvements that the 8cx Gen 2 would offer compared to the previous model, let alone the generation-to-generation performance and efficiency gains.
However, Qualcomm is fully committed to demonstrating that the new 8cx Gen 2 chipset is more than capable and effective against traditional Intel systems. It turned out that the 8cx Gen 2 was superior to the two 10th generation Intel Core i5 chips. This is a significant performance gain over Intel Lakefield chips, which are designed to directly challenge the efforts of Qualcomm notebooks and even use an identical hybrid core system.
It has an AI engine and some improvements over its predecessor. Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G offers sufficient support for Wi-Fi 6 and is able to make a 5G connection via a special modem. The chipset is also capable of efficiently providing several days of battery life on future laptops.
Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G contains eight Qualcomm Cryo 495 processor cores and is based on a 64-bit architecture and a 7nm processor. It also features a dedicated Artificial Intelligence engine, supported by a Hexagon 690 processor and Sensing Hub technology to enable Artificial Intelligence (AI) acceleration. All this contributes to a better performance compared to the Snapdragon 8cx, which made its debut in December 2018.
